Day Twenty-Eight: Silence

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night
All is calm; all is bright
‘Round yon virgin Mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, Holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
Jesus, Lord at thy birth.

Silent night, Holy night
Shepherds quake, at the sight
Glories stream from heaven above
Heavenly, hosts sing Hallelujah.
Christ the Savior is born.

It’s hard to find silence here at the end of the season. The whole month has been moving inexorably toward a grand celebration even when celebration wasn’t really in our hearts. But pausing here, we find a quiet stable – a rough shelter – and inside, a newborn cries. Like every birth, it is a holy moment. His parents are in awe – this little boy with his ten tiny fingers and toes is now their responsibility. God help them.

Prayer Prompt: Let your prayer rise with the angels’ song: Hallelujah!
